Can someone tell what type/grade of oil to use in a 2004 3500 Slverado Duramax 6.6. Vehicle has 83K
Any good diesel oil will work.
Some common brands people like are:
Rotella, Delo, Mobil 1 and Amsoil.
All are good IMHO and all do their job well; even conventional oil.
Case in point, I have a 40 year old Case tractor with over 10,000 hours on the clock and it just started using a quart/100 hours. It has never had the valve cover off. It has 15/40 Rotella put in it all it's life.
As far as weight goes. 15/40 is my choice. Syn people like 5w40's or even 0w40's.
Would like to find repair/owners manual that's specifically for the 04' 3500 Silverado Duramax Diesel, owners manual is generic. Truck was purchased for business about 6 months ago and don't think any service has been done since. I now have it for personal use and wish to get all the service work up to date and to specs, or close.

Mike pretty much hit it on the head.
The manuel calls for 15W-40. If your in an extreme cold climate I would go 5W-40 in Winter 15W/40 Summer.
I run Amsoil AME 15W-40 in mine. I have 10k miles on it and am awaiting the oil analisis to determine whether its time to change or go to 15k.

Agreed. 15W-40 is best for most situations. 10W-40 & 5W-40 can/shoulb be used in colder climates. As for the brand of oil, as long as its the correct weight/grade and sythetic you should be good to go. Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Red line, Rotella, are all great oils.
Went with 15/40 Rotella.. Now that service is all current and still getting alot of exhaust smoke at idle may take to dealer for complete inspection.
This may be for another post BUT any suggestions how to check injectors?? Can I pull just one that's accessible and have local injector shop look at, or best to have dealer use their fancy diagnostic equipment??
just changed fuel filter 2 days ago.. noticed smoke yesterday but this morning not near as much smoke on idle, hmm. An employee had it passed 6 months and told me the smoke and also thought a computer glitch was cause truck to feel like jake was ingaged?? Probably needs a good complete diagnostic check of entire engine..
Thanks for your responce
